Planning a Matchday Around Your Dog
Pets cannot go into the Allianz Arena, so a pet-friendly hotel is really about the hours either side of the match: a room where your dog is welcome, space for a walk and an easy way to reach Fröttmaning without a crowded journey together. The listed hotels split into useful groups: hotels by the Olympiapark, where the park itself offers room to walk, free-parking hotels in the north of Munich for those arriving by car, and the Motel One in Garching on the U6, one stop from the stadium.
The Olympiapark area is my first choice for travelling with a dog. H2 Hotel München Olympiapark, a few minutes' walk from the park and from Oberwiesenfeld U-Bahn station, welcomes pets, has a 24-hour restaurant and scores 8.4 from almost 6,000 guests. Leonardo Hotel Munich City Olympiapark, also at 8.4, lists pet-friendly options and room service, which helps when you would rather not leave the dog alone at dinner. The park offers long paths and lawns for a morning walk before the match, and the hotels are linked to the stadium by public transport, so you can go to the game while your dog rests.
Arriving by car makes travelling with a pet much simpler, and several listed hotels combine pet-friendly rooms with free parking. Hotel Motel One München-Parkstadt Schwabing, rated 9 by more than 2,600 guests, is pet-friendly and accessible, with free parking and a terrace. B&B Hotel München City-Nord welcomes pets, includes parking and has a public transport stop a minute's walk away. Super 8 by Wyndham Munich City North describes itself as suited to guests travelling with pets and adds free breakfast and free parking. With the car at the hotel, a vet visit or a trip out of town stays easy.
For supporters who want to be close to the Allianz Arena itself, Hotel Motel One München-Garching is the strongest pick. It is a two-minute walk from Garching-Hochbrück U-Bahn station, one stop from Fröttmaning on the U6, it welcomes pets and it scores 9 out of 10 from more than 1,600 guests. Its soccer-themed bar with a terrace and foosball suits the evening before the match. Being this close means less time away from your dog on matchday: you can leave late, return soon after the final whistle and take your dog out before the crowds have even left the stadium.
If you prefer more comfort for a longer stay, the larger hotels on the list also accept pets. Munich Marriott Hotel adds a spa, an indoor pool and a fitness centre, and has parking and good links to the city and the airport. Steigenberger Hotel München, rated 8.8, offers a spa with saunas and a fine-dining restaurant. INNSiDE by Meliá München Parkstadt Schwabing has a spa and a fitness centre. With 29 listed pet-friendly hotels, I would ask each one about its pet fee and size limits before booking, and whether a dog may stay alone in the room during the match.
Munich, a city renowned for its football culture and the iconic Allianz Arena, also embraces a pet-friendly ethos, particularly in its green spaces and certain public areas. While the stadium itself has restrictions, the surrounding districts offer ample opportunities for pet owners to enjoy their stay. The city's efficient public transport system, including the U-Bahn, provides good connections to the arena, though specific rules for pets on transport should always be checked. Beyond match days, Munich offers numerous parks and riverside paths perfect for dog walks, ensuring your companion is well-exercised and happy.
